08.35 - 09.05

Eldborg

Hjálmar Gíslason

Many dream about starting a company. Most don't. More surprisingly many of those that do, do so without having thought too much about why, and what their ultimate goal is. Hjálmar Gíslason is starting his fifth software company this fall. In his talk, he will share notes that he's written to his future self working on startups past. Those that have only watched the startup world from afar may get a little "behind the scenes" look, while those that are on the startup bandwagon may be able to avoid some of Hjálmar's mistakes, and focus on making new ones - and better - instead.

Digital news delivery has never been more complicated than right now. The deterioration of the most powerful distribution channels, such as Facebook, has caused an upset, not only when it comes to distribution but when it comes to producing content. But how do you deliver news when the optimal means for delivery become ever more obscure? How does a medium inspire trust and credibility in an environment characterized by suspicion and scepticism? Ingibjörg Þórðardóttir is the Executive Editor for CNN Digital International. She will be talking about the challenges for publishers in the current chaotic environment. Rather than trying to keep up with the ever-changing channels for distribution she has been an advocate of defining a steady course and following it.

We will share with you the main learnings from Activity Stream's journey to become a data-first company. The goal of this journey has been to ensure that our AI models have a rich set of data to work on, and that they are easily deployable and re-usable across customers. We call our methodology the Data First Approach, recognizing that great insights start with great data. New research shows that many companies are struggling to deploy machine learning to solve real business problems and one of the biggest barriers is siloed data. We will discuss how Activity Stream is overcoming these issues, by having business value drivers motivating the project and implementing governance of the whole data value chain, ranging from ingestion of heterogeneous sources of data, standardization, integration and enrichment of data to reusable analytics and relevant presentation

In the last two years we have seen a massive spike in disclosed vulnerabilities rendering the common method of patching vulnerabilities in a top-down order (highest severity first) ineffective. This presentation focuses on vulnerability trends and how organisations are forced to change their prioritisation methods by bringing third party threat intelligence into vulnerability context and applying dynamic asset tagging on asset importance, as organisations simply cannot keep up with the number of disclosed vulnerabilities."

Brian Gorenc will give a short introduction about the Zero Day Initiative ( ZDI ) that was founded in 2005. ZDI is an bug bounty program where Trend Micro has awarded more than $15 million USD to participants that have been able to highlight flaws in widely used and popular software. Resulting in nearly 4,500 0-day exploits that have been patched by vendors, all of which makes the computing landscape a safer space. Bug bounty programs were considered to be a rare commodity. Now they are seen as an indispensable means for companies to acquire bug reports. The program also provided the data needed to protect Trend Micro customers while the affected vendor is working on a patch. Bug reports that come through the program disrupt the exploit market and force bad actors to change their techniques. It goes beyond merely buying bug reports to true superiority in terms of vulnerability and exploit intelligence.

All management follows some sort of processes, whether they are drawn up or not. Mapping up processes is the most efficient way of insuring a common understanding of how a business is managed. During this kind of management mapping, opportunities for improving the business will present themselves. Are we following optimal procedures? Is the outcome the sort of service we want to offer our clients? Are we efficient or is there room for further streamlining? Are we aware of the threats ahead and are we ready to take them on? Mapping processes is especially important when they are digitized. The picture we draw up helps us choose the elements we want to digitize and when the project has been digitized we have a clear projection of the process invloved within the new digital solution. You can't run a business with out processes but companies have a choice of whether they are aware of their processes and control them sensibly or not.

Ambitious companies have recognised that by paying attention to UX, they can make greater progress themselves. However, it is not always obvious how to provide positive user experiences. Wait But Why

One day in early 2015, Elon Musk called Tim Urban on the phone. He told Urban he liked his blog, Wait But Why, and asked Urban if he’d consider doing some writing about the industries he’s involved in with his companies Tesla and SpaceX. Urban accepted the offer and went on to write four epic blog posts that Vox’s David Roberts called “the meatiest, most fascinating, most satisfying posts I've read in ages.” The Cooks & Chefs talk is often a hit with entrepreneurial and business-minded audiences but also applies on a personal level. As the digital world changes, the need for original thinking and adaptability is constantly increasing, and this talk provides people with a framework for staying ahead of the curve.

A positive customer experience is critical to a company’s brand and, ultimately, its bottom line. With the proliferation of technology and devices, the customer has become smarter and more powerful. Customers now decide when and how they want to interact with brands, which has had a direct impact on the way companies sell to their customers. While macro trends such as social, mobile, cloud, big data and IoT are forging a new era of engagement, customers are ultimately becoming far more disruptive than the technology itself. Salesforce’s Global, Customer Growth and Innovation Evangelist, Tiffani Bova, will address how companies of all sizes can create new business practices that leverage technology to strengthen customer relationships and accelerate sales and growth. Attendees will hear actionable takeaways on how to create a customer-centric business and long-lasting brand loyalty.
